Afghan and ISAF officials inaugurated a bridge in the Zeerko Valley of Herat Province yesterday.

The €1 million project was funded by the Italian Ministry of Defence and is considered to be the most important effort carried out by the Italian Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).

The bridge is located in the Shindand district 115 kilometers south of Herat, bordering the Farah Province. The 8-meter-wide, 160-meter-long bridge is considered strategic for the movement of goods.

The project started in October 2007 and was completed by local companies and workers. The effort was slowed by repeated insurgent attacks in the area.

"This project is a clear demonstration of the effective presence and common synergy of purpose among ISAF and Afghan Institutions,” said Brig. Gen. Alessandro Veltri, Regional Command-West commander. “This is still an extremely sensitive area in terms of security, but it is growing rapidly thanks to a widespread presence of ISAF forces in the territory. We are going, together, in the right direction with an increasingly concrete commitment to the fundamental public works of reconstruction and development to benefit the people. A bridge is always a symbol of unity; the strong and durable bond all of us hope for the future of this country."

Lal Mohammad Omarzai, Shindand district governor, Saooib Masoomee, consultant for the district business of the governorate of Herat, Col. Claudio Dei, Italian PRT commander, Col. Francesco Maria Ceravolo, Task Force Center commander, and other local government authorities and elders attended the ceremony.

Mr. Omarzai expressed his gratitude, “for the realization of a structure through which it will be possible not only to liaise the villages located on opposite sides of the river, but also allow transit by road during the winter season, with beneficial impacts on economic and social development and increased security.” Add a comment

KABUL, Afghanistan (March 9) - ISAF members joined their Afghan hosts in celebrating Women's Day across Afghanistan yesterday.

In Kabul, the Ministry of Women's Affairs organized a ceremony to promote the active role of women in Afghan society. About 800 women from different institutions and government officials participated in the event, to include Turkish women soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Brig. Gen. Levent Colak, Regional Command-Capital commander.

Mojgan Mustafavi, deputy minister of technical policy, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.

"We celebrate and value this special day and our efforts are not over," said Ms. Mustafavi. "We have a bright and hopeful future ahead of us with many doors that are opening to us. The challenges our sisters have faced and the patience shown, in the capital and all across the country, will pave the way for a bright future filled with success."

In the Herat province, Yusuf Nuristani, province governor, invited Brig. Gen. Alessandro Veltri, Regional Command-West commander, to watch a short film made by the Department of Women Affairs about the Afghan women's plight during the Taliban period.

"The rebirth of this country is mainly in the hands of women," said General Veltri. "ISAF's support of the Afghan people, and women in particular, will never diminish because the values at the foundation of our daily operations are based on respect and understanding of local cultures, customs and traditions." KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan and International Security Assistance Force officials opened a new runway at Mazar-e-Sharif airport in Balkh Province Wednesday.

The Afghan deputy minister for transport and civil aviation, the governor of Balkh province, ISAF's Regional Command-North commander, numerous local officials, residents and media attended the ceremony officially opening the new 3,000 meter, $30 million runway. The runway was consecrated and blessed by Muezzin (second behind the Mullah) of the Blue Mosque.

"This project offers a large opportunity to boost traffic into the region, it provides the potential for an economic boom in the province," said Razz Mohammad Aelmi, Afghan Deputy Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation.

The new NATO-funded runway was built alongside the old runway, which is in urgent need of repair and can no longer be used by large-capacity aircraft.

Maj. Gen. Jochen Both, ISAF Joint Command deputy chief of staff for air operations, highlighted the decisive role the runway will have on reconstruction and stabilization in northern Afghanistan. It will be used as a hub for NATO troops flowing into northern Afghanistan as part of the troop increase.

Brig. Gen. Frank Leidenberger, RC-North commander, addressed the crowd in Dari saying Afghanistan's air traffic infrastructure needs to be rebuilt, which is one of the reasons Germany decided to step in and fund the project, which also includes a new terminal building.

"Together with our international friends we will find the best solutions for our country and will continue to proceed with its reconstruction and development," said Atta Mohammed Noor, the province governor. Add a comment

Foundation Stone Laid for Women’s Business Centre in Herat

KABUL, Afghanistan (March 8)Afghan and ISAF officials attended a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new women’s business centre yesterday in Herat Province.

The Italian Cooperation for Development of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will supply all furniture and necessary equipment for the centre as well as launch a microcredit project, which is an economic tool for development that will provide affected families access to financial services and, in particular, to women.

“Through this project we will provide financial support for the initiation of individual businesses and boost their natural development,” said Brig. Gen. Coalition Doctors Provide Life-Changing Surgery for Afghan Boy

KABUL, Afghanistan (March 6) - A young Afghan boy severely burned five months ago has undergone extensive surgery by Afghan and coalition doctors that could help him recover from a tragic home accident.

Abdul Rahman, who is 8 years old and the youngest of six children, is being treated for third-degree burns suffered at his home in Nimroz province. While transferring gasoline from one container to another, some leaked and dripped onto his chest. Nearly two hours later, Abdul struck a match in his family's kitchen and his chest was scorched immediately.

"I carried my son to the Nimroz public hospital, but I did not have enough money to pay for his treatment," explained Abdul's father, Abdul Fatah. "I work as a mechanic making 100 Afghanis per day. My wife is dead and there is no one else to help."

After hearing of a Special Forces clinic in Helmand Province, Abdul and his injured son walked three days from Kang Village to the firebase to request help. Unable to provide the necessary treatment at the firebase clinic, Special Forces medics spoke with the Afghan National Army about the situation. The ANA volunteered to escort the child and father to the ANA hospital in Kandahar province for surgery.

Before departing, ANA doctors reviewed his file and requested support from a coalition doctor experienced in skin trauma. Dr. Yama and Dr. Steinberg greeted the boy and his father, Feb. 28, and the combined medical team prepared the boy for surgery.

Unable to rotate his head because scar tissue fused his chin to his chest during healing, Abdul was extremely malnourished and in too much pain to swallow whole foods.
