A scholarship fund set up for children of Canadian Force members killed in action after Jan. 1, 2002, recently provided post-secondary funding to the son of an Air Force imagery technician.

Scott Senecal, from Moose Jaw, Sask., lost his father, Sergeant Chuck Senecal, on Oct. 9, 2008 when the CT-114 Tutor from 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron in which he was a passenger crashed northwest of 15 Wing Moose Jaw, Sask. Sgt Senecal was killed along with Captain Brian Mitchell, the aircraft’s pilot.

Mr. Senecal, 24, received a cheque for $ 4,000, the maximum amount given yearly, from Canada Company. He is currently enrolled in the business management program and is a recent graduate of the criminal justice program, both at Lethbridge College in Alberta.

“We are deeply saddened that so many children have lost a parent on active duty since January 2002,” said Lieutenant-General Andrew Leslie, Chief of the Land Staff. “In this tragedy there can be hope. Today these children should know that they are part of a bigger family of caring Canadian individuals and corporations that are looking out for our incredible soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen and their families.”

Canada Company established this scholarship fund in 2007. Up to $4,000 annually, for up to four years, is available to those who are eligible.

“This initiative is about Canadians showing support to our military and their families and helping to ensure that their loved ones are taken care of,” said Blake Goldring, Chairman of Canada Company and Chairman and CEO, AGF Management Limited. “Canada Company provides the means for business and individuals alike to show that we care and to support the men and women who put their lives on the line.”
